Buying a used guitar can be a great way to save money and get a higher-quality instrument than you might otherwise be able to afford if you were buying new.
When shopping for used guitars, it pays to do some shopping around first. Play a variety of guitars at your local guitar shop or borrow your friends' guitars so you can get a feel for what you like and don't like about the different types of guitars.

What To Look Out For When Shopping For A Used Guitar
There are also a few things you might not have thought of such as what kind of strings the guitar has, whether its a right or left handed guitar, and in the case of a bass - whether you want a 4-string or 5-string model. Also consider how much money you'll want to allocate to accessories and other items such as a guitar case, replacement strings, picks, tuners, and sheet music.

I think it makes a lot of sense to go with a manufacturer who is well-respected in the industry, especially if you're buying used. That way, you're much more likely to get a quality instrument that can stand the test of time.

Read on eBay about the buyer protections available to you - including the vendor's return policy, and make sure you ask the vendor your questions before you decide to bid or "buy it now." Also, take a look at the photographs provided. Are they clear, bright and do they show all sides of the guitar? Sometimes if someone is not showing you a certain angle, it's because there is a mark or something to hide in that area.
Also, sometimes older guitars can warp or bend as the strings pull on the neck, so be sure to ask about the sound quality of the guitar.
If your primary purpose in buying a used guitar is to save money, you might want to consider getting an inexpensive new guitar that will work well right our of the box.
