Things To Do When Visiting Brecon

Brecon is located in Wales in the area of Powys. This is a very historic market town though its historical importance is normally eclipsed by the city of Powys. Brecon was originally formed as a cavalry base for the Romans. Brecon was strategically important as this was one of the only spots in which the river could be crossed.

Because of the importance of this spot as the rivers Honddu and Usk joining together there is a castle. There is a cathedral also present just a short distance from the Norman castle. This cathedral is actually very modest when compared to others of the same time period.

Brecon has become very popular because it is right next to Brecon Beacons National park. Many people holiday near the park in order to enjoy the beauty of the Brecon Mountains. You can view Pen y Fan, the highest of all the mountains, from Brecon. If you should be in Brecon during August then you can take in one of the many concerts during the jazz festival. There is still the military in Brecon as there is an Infantry Battle school and barracks.

The National Park is the largest draw to visitors in the area and the mountain range is the most central section of the park. The tallest mountain in the range is Pen y Fan and the entire range causes a horseshoe ridge that surrounds the Taf Fechan River. The park first opened in 1957 and contains moorlands, mountains, forestry plantations and pastures.

If you are interested in the history then you should visit the Brecknock Museum. This museum contains artifacts and exhibits from the history of the surrounding area. The exhibits range from the Stone Age through the Roman settlement. There is also an art gallery in the museum and the artwork tends to focus on farming and agriculture of the area.

A new entertainment complex that was opened in 1997 is the Theatr Brycheiniog. Inside the theatre is an auditorium, art gallery, community spaces, bar, restaurant and conference venue. Many international entertainers come to perform hear and it is also the home of the jazz festival. The theatre is very close to the center of town right by the canal.

Another excellent museum is the South Wales Borderers Museum which contains the history of the 24th regiment of the Foot. This museum contains more than 300 years of the regiments activities and has a room devoted to medals.
