Essential Items For A Good Camping Trip

by Rick Finley

If you go camping, you know how easily some of the essentials can be forgotten. While the following is not an all inclusive list of items to take on your next camping trip, it may give you some ideas that will make your next trip go more smoothly.

Do not forget your tent. Even RV campers often find that a tent makes a great storage locker for extra gear. Often the kids will enjoy sleeping out in a tent giving mom and dad more room in the RV. Cabin style tents provide more headroom for campers that do dome style tents.

We also take lots of plastic tarps. One goes under the tent to prevent water from seeping back though the floor. A small tarp makes our front porch for taking shoes on and off when entering or leaving the tent.

A second tarp comes in handy in case of a rainstorm. The less water that reaches the tent, the less likely it is to develop a leak.

During cooler weather tarps make great windbreaks for the picnic table. We use a canopy and tie the tarps to the support poles on three sides to make a very warm enclosure during early spring camping.

We often choose to pay a few dollars more for a campsite with electrical hookups. This keeps us from having to bring the camp stove and all the extra pots and pans. An electric frying pan and coffeemaker will suffice for most of our camp meals that need heat. At times we have been known to take a fan along for warm nights or to keep down the outside noise. This is very helpful if you have small children who have difficulty sleeping due to the outside noise.

Of all the things we take camping, we find that our attitude is the most important. When adults approach a trip as an adventure, kids have a good time. If the adults are constantly at each other's throats, the kids will sense the tension and not be on their best behavior either. Be sure that you pack a good attitude. It will pay off with a great camping trip.
