When you are deciding on which guitar you want to invest in, make sure you consider your current set up and available funds.
For example - will you need to save money for a guitar case, sheet music, guitar picks, strings or how-to-play-the-guitar videos?
Secondly, if you're investing in an electric guitar, what kind of amp do you have, will you be playing in a band with other instruments? Do you want to get a six string guitar or something that's not standard... My brother-in-law decided to get a 5-string base which he really enjoyed, but found that he had to re-learn to play it as it was an entirely different type of instrument.
If you're playing in front of large groups in a band or in concerts, you might want to pay more for a really cool looking guitar. If you're playing at home, though, you might want to go for a standard finish on the guitar and put the money you save toward the purchase of your next instrument, microphones or even recording/composing equipment or software.
